Synthetic / Imitation Enamel
(Semi-cloisonne/Imitation Hard Enamel/Fake Cloisonne/Imintation Cloisonne/Epola/Poly-hard Enamel/Soft Cloisonne/Synthetic Enamel)
Imitation Cloisonné was developed in an effort to produce very similar quality to Cloisonné, faster production time, a more economical price and the distinct advantage of being able to match Pantone colors, which the cloisonné method can not reproduce exactly. The base metal is raised as fine lines to separate the colors so they will not flow together and provides contrast in the design. Also similar to Cloisonné, Imitation enamel has a hard, glasslike, jewelry type appearance and provides a smooth, shiny finish.

Imitation Steps:
Stamping Molding >Molding the metal surface to form the design.
Outline Cutting >Imitation Enamel lapel pins are die struck from a copper surface. A die is created to imprint your design into the metal. The outline of the pin and any cut-outs are then cut with another mold.
Coloring >One color at a time is added by hand-filled using different syringes.
Oven Baking >Each piece is baked at elevated oven temperatures.
Stoning >Each pin are stoning with a carborundum stone until the excess color has been carried out.
Polishing >The pins are individually hand polished until smooth and shiny.
Attachment >Attachment is welded on to the back of each piece
Plating >Now plating can be processed with various plating.
Inspection >Each pin is inspected to ensure only the highest quality is individually packaged and send for final inspection.
The result is a high-quality product which is nearly indistinguishable from Cloisonné. Imitation Cloisonné is an economical production alternative which provides the expensive look of Cloisonné while offering a wider variety of color choices and shorter production time.
What are the differences between Synthetic Enamel, Soft Enamel, and Cloisonne Enamel?
The major differences between these three coloring materials will be in terms of production techniques and color rendering.
Synthetic Enamel is probably the best material to render bright and shiny for colors in a reasonable cost. Colors are leveled evenly to the metal borders and totally flat on the product surface.
Soft Enamel, in general speaking, it is cheaper in cost compare to Synthetic and Cloisonne Enamel. It has a similar color render to Synthetic Enamel but color zones recess and lower than metal borders. Metal boarders are easy to define
Cloisonne Enamel differ from Soft and Synthetic Enamel. It is natural mineral substance and melted during heating process. It is not as bright and shiny as Soft and Synthetic Enamel, but the color lasts for hundred of years without destroying on purpose.
Cloisonne Enamel is seldom used in the pin badge industry nowadays
